WASHINGTON -- The NFL fined President Bush $5,000 today for taunting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during last week's State of the Union Address.
In his address, President Bush said, "I congratulate the Democrat majority." Democrats prefer "Democratic." They say it subtly reminds people of populist President Andrew Jackson, whereas "Democrat" subtly reminds people to grab their wallets.
In addition to the verbal taunt, the president pointed at Pelosi and wagged his finger before somersaulting into the end zone, spiking the ball and doing an end zone dance "wholly inappropriate for the NFL's family audience."
"For his flagrant taunting of Speaker Pelosi and the entire Democratic majority, President Bush was fined $5,000," an NFL spokesman confirmed on Sunday. "He also has to sit out next week's Cabinet meeting."
Asked what authority the NFL had to fine the president of the United States for a violation of NFL rules, the spokesman said, "Oh, yeah, that was in the 2002 farm bill. Man, I bet Bush wishes he vetoed that one now!"
