GARY, Ind. -- First-term Gary City Council member Carab Amabo said today that he would not rule out a run for the White House in 2008.
Amabo, known in Gary as the white Bill Clinton, is the only Caucasian member of Gary's City Council. He posesses a winning smile, a compelling personal narrative (his mother is white, his father kind of a pasty, transparent pink), and an abundance of charisma.
Media pundits began discussing him as a possible presidential contender immediately upon his election to the council two years ago. Fueled by around-the-clock media coverage, Amabo fever swept through Gary.
"The first time I heard that white boy speak on TV, I said, 'shoot. He's got my vote," said resident Shirley Pratt. "He's just got that sumpin'-sumpin', you know what I'm sayin'? I don't know what it is, but he's got it."
Amabo's excess of charisma and his ability to enunciate clearly have opened doors for the politician whom many in the media consider unusually gifted for a white man.
Amabo told a gaggle of fawning reporters today that although he would not rule out a run for the presidency next year, he would make no decision yet.
"I appreciate the confidence the media have in me," he said. "But now is a little early to be deciding whether to run for president. I'd like to be a more seasoned and experienced politician before making that leap. If only I were a freshman U.S. senator just a year and a half into my term, that would be ideal."
