SAN MATEO, Calif. -- YouTube today removed what it called an "offensive" video of a fluffy kitten playing on a kitchen floor.
"It's just a video of a kitten," said the video's creator, Tammy Shasta, 34, of Flagler Beach, Fla. "How could anyone find it offensive?"
In the video, the kitten, "Rush," pounces upon a copy of Michelle Malkin's new book, "Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild", scampers past a large plastic bin bearing a Republican Party sticker, and playfully bats around a copy of National Review and a dangled pass from the 2004 Republican National Convention.
A YouTube spokesman would only say that a member had flagged the video as offensive for containing "objectionable content," and the YouTube team agreed that some of the video's content would offend some members of the YouTube community.
A spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals explained that the video probably was pulled for animal cruelty reasons.
"That woman exposed a poor, defenseless kitten directly to vicious, kitten-hating, right-wing propaganda," said PETA spokeswoman Jane Badall. "She didn't even buffer it with a pillowcase or anything. We've already alerted the SPCA, the DA, the PD and the FBI. Unfortunately, there are Republican administrations in both Tallahassee and Washington, and so no one is going to arrest a woman for reading conservative literature. I mean, animal cruelty! No one is going to arrest her for animal cruelty!"
